Group therapy with bodily mediation for obese teenagers. Therapeutic containment when loosing weight

Abstract our reflection centers on the utility of the psychoanalytic body-based group as a way to take charge of teenager obesity. Indeed, the therapeutic group can work as a containment for obese teenagers when they are losing weight. Indeed, in this period they show a lack of both transitionality and psychic containment which results in a turbulent unconscious image of the body. In this article we will underline the psychic and bodily dimensions of these girls that lose weight and, at the same time, the individual and group challenges of a body-me Read more

Building a course of therapeutic treatment

Abstract

The author offers a reflection on the internal/external dialectic dynamic as a central element in the organisation of the therapeutic community’s task. This dialectic regards the psychic and relational life of patients who, upon admittance to the community, distance themselves from the healthy or pathological objects of investment that have accompanied them to that point and enter a new context of treatment and relations. In this passage they also carry within themselves their own psychic and relational styles, proceed by trial and error in the attempt to either keep these alive or else try out new ways of being in the world. Communities also experience the tension between the social exterior, with its rules and contradictions–at times so pivotal to the development of a psychopathology, Read more

Caregiver Training

Abstract

Homo sapiens inherited enormous genetic potential, selected over a great arc of time, which has proved indispensable to his survival but at times also manifests useless or even irritatingly awkward vestigial aspects that create a sort of dissonance, an evolutionary mismatch. Aggressiveness is one of those potentially problematic aspects that, if it is properly channelled does not necessarily have to lead to violence and destructiveness, but can become a resource, a way of adapting effectively to civilised contexts. Humans have evolved the ability to bring conflict to a symbolic level, Read more

Looking for “myself as a therapist”

Abstract
The first coordinator of multifamily psychoanalyses groups was Jorge García Badaracco. Many people around the world are trying to continue his work, sometimes from quite different ideological and professional positions.
Quite often doubts arise about we are or are not doing a good job, and discrepancies appear. Then, in relation to the difficulty, the need per external references arises with the desire to be sure that we are doing a good job. On the other hand, Badaracco did not leave too many instructions written down. Read more

Skin surface and mental skin: the burn-accident as a symptom

Abstract

Through the suggestions provided by a clinical case a brief panorama has been carried out regarding the position of some authors in the psycho-analytical traditions on the functions of the skin in psychic development. The particularity of the case under examination is that of highlighting how an accident in adolescence can be the sign of a fracture in a very primitive phase of development of the personality; in this case the incapacity of the external-mother object to contain the components of Self of the child and making it an inadequate structure for the function of the boundary of skin for the components of his personality and the consequent creation of a defensive “second skin” which blocked the access to a phase of psycho-affective development adequate for his age. It is this second skin, this “shell” that it was necessary to dent to bring to light the deep malaise that had accompanied the life of this boy. It must be stressed also that in dealing with cases of this type, the analyst should not refer greatly to Read more

The Dream Narrative as an Interpersonal Event – Research Results

Abstract

The author presents a specific type of narration: the dreamtelling as a request for containment and elaboration of specific mental contents. It is underlined how the possibility of communicating and sharing his/her own dreams represents a function learned in the course of the earliest exchanges between parents and children. The results of a research are illustrated – its purpose is to investigate the correlation between either the development or the inhibition of this function, on the part of parents and the gender Read more
